  • But most people don’t know that India’s postal department is also popular for its floating post office in the Dal Lake branch.

  • Apart from its natural beauty, weather, and ambience, Srinagar’s  Dal Lake is very popular worldwide for having the world’s first Floating  post office.
  • This Post Office is floating on a huge houseboat with two small rooms in Dal Lake.
  • One room is for its office and another for a small museum. There have philately museum, shops that postage stamp, picture post cards, greetings cards, local souvenir items, stationery and several books on Kashmir in this post office.
  • Apart from these service this  Floating post office allow tourists to call and email their friends and relatives all across the world.
  • It’ s basically a heritage post office that has existed since British Times and was called Neheru Park Post Office before 2011.
  • In 2011 former chief post master John Samuel took an intiative to repurpose it and renamed as “Floating Post Office”.
  • In 2011 Floating Post was inaugurated  by  Jammu Kashmir’s former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Union Minister of States for communication and IT Sachin Pilot.
